One Year of Our Homesteading Journey

Posted by on August 17, 2014

Yesterday was my one year anniversary blogging our homesteading journey. I’m not sure where the time went!

Our Year on the Homestead - IdlewildAlaska

Where has the year gone?!?

Looking back over my posts, it’s fun to see how far we’ve come here on the homestead. It really did “All Start with a Loaf of Bread.” That was our first step towards self-sufficiency. I started making our own fresh bread. The recipe has changed several times, and I admit we do still occasionally buy a loaf or two, but it was a beginning.

Who doesn’t love fresh-from-the-oven homemade bread?!?

We’re still gathering firewood for the coming winter, an unending chore. The pile in the backyard is growing beautifully and soon we’ll have to buckle down and start splitting and stacking it all. Hard work, but so very worth it.

Can you ever have enough firewood?

Our greenhouse and garden were built this spring. Both still need work, but the major construction projects are done. I picked the first of our harvest tonight! I’m thinking homemade pizza with lots of veggies for dinner tomorrow…

The first of our 2014 harvest!

The biggest step, I think, is the addition of the chickens to our lives. I love our little coop! We’ve gardened before; I was an avid baker in high school; and some of my earliest memories are of hauling firewood with my parents. But chickens are a whole new experience for us. The girls are growing fast, and I’m looking forward to those wonderful, fresh eggs!

They’re getting big fast!

There have been many times when this journey has been overwhelming. The never ending To-Do List is always looming around the corner, but it’s so worth it. In the past year, our diets and habits have slowly changed, and the hubby and I are both healthier for it.

We love our life in our little Alaskan cabin with our three sweet pups and ever curious chickens in the backyard. God is continually blessing us every step we take, and it is because of Him that we lack for nothing and are blessed far beyond what we ever imagined.

There’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re getting there!

I admire you so much! I am really working hard to be a bit more self-sufficient. I actually planted a few things in the garden this year, and hope to be better at making more things from scratch.
