Book Review: Winds of Skilak

Posted by on August 23, 2015

I love reading books about homesteaders and sourdoughs in Alaska from days gone by. Winds of Skilak is one of those books. I was recently approached by the author, Bonnie Rose Ward, who asked me if I would like to do a review on her book about her life as an Alaskan homesteader. I jumped on the opportunity and loved her book!

Winds of Skilak Book Review - IdlewildAlaska

Winds of Skilak is the story of a husband and wife who left everything behind to start a homesteading life in Alaska in 1980. They drove to AK, searched for the perfect place, and found it on Caribou Island on Skilak Lake. They built a beautiful little cabin, hunted, gardened, trapped furs, raised chickens, goats, and Petunia Pig. I loved reading about their adventures as “homesteaders.”

The book is so well written, you feel like you get to know Sam and Bonnie personally. Bonnie shares their trials, their victories, their adventures, their love of Alaska, and so much more.

From the back cover of Winds of Skilak:

Winds of Skilak traces a young couple’s adventurous move from the suburbs of Ohio to a remote island on ill-tempered Skilak Lake. As Sam and Bonnie adapt to a life without running water, electricity and telephones, the unforgiving, desolate environment tests their courage early on. Facing sub-freezing temperatures, unfriendly bears, and cabin fever, the Wards find strength in new friends, each other, and the awe-inspiring beauty of “the last frontier.” Just when they finally settle in, a freak accident proves to be the ultimate test of their resolve. Will they be able to survive in this isolated wilderness filled with unseen dangers?

Author Bonnie Ward chronicles an exciting and thought-provoking tale of one couple’s faith in God and dedication to each other through all of Alaska’s curveballs. Winds of Skilak is a true tale of absorbing force, sure to bring out your own sense of adventure.

I’m in the UK and bought this book after seeing a documentary on discovery called the last Alaskans. I love love loved it, Bonnie writes so beautifully with real emotion and she’s sparked a bit of an obsession with any Alaskans homestead type books within me now! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Xx
