It’s been getting chilly fast! Time to prep the homestead for winter and when we have time, check out these 7 things to do in Alaska in October! Just because it’s chilly and the official “tourist season” is over, doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do!

Holiday Shopping in Anchorage

Start off the Holiday Season with shopping for Made in Alaska products. Everything at the Festival is made by Alaskan artists in Alaska. Get more information on their website.

The Alaska Railroad has a couple great events in October. The first is the Great Alaska Beer Train. This train makes it way down Turnagain Arm to Portage and back, all while enjoying Glacier Brewhouse brews and food. Get your tickets online.

Musk Ox Party

Alaskans have their own version of Oktoberfest- Oxtoberfest! Enjoy Alaska grown German food and party with the Musk Ox in Palmer! Tickets available online.

Celebrate the Alaskan Sale in Sitka

“Alaska Day Festival annually commemorates the Transfer of Russian claim of Alaska to the United States of America at Sitka on October 18, 1867, and celebrates the diversity of cultures and historical perspectives of our people.” (source)



Kids on the Train

The second event the Alaska Railroad puts on in October is the Kid’s Halloween Train. Take the kids on this fun 2.5 hour trip south from Anchorage with costumes, crafts, treats, a magician, games, and much more! There are multiple trains and dates for this event- get your tickets online!

Holiday Shopping in Palmer

Every October, the Alaska State Fair puts on a huge Holiday Bazaar inside Raven Hall on the Fairgrounds. Be sure to check out all these Alaskan vendors and get a head start on that Christmas shopping! (Psst- Happy Bison will be there selling their Grillin’ Sauces and Spice Rubs!)

Enjoy a Quiet Getaway
